April 18, 2023: Dominion defamation trial against Fox begins, Putin visits occupied Ukraine, Sudan, Evan Gershkovich
1. The courtroom showdown in the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox and Fox News is set to get underway on Tuesday, with jury selection due to be completed and opening statements delivered in a trial putting one of the world’s leading media properties in the crosshairs.
2. Russian President Vladimir Putin has met his commanders in two regions of Ukraine that Moscow claims to have annexed, while Russian forces stepped up heavy artillery bombardments and air strikes on the devastated eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut.
3. Prosecutors charged an 84-year-old white Kansas City man with two felonies on Monday in the shooting of a Black teenager, Ralph Yarl, who was wounded after walking up to the wrong house when going to pick up his younger twin brothers.
4. Sudan’s rival commanders agreed a 24-hour ceasefire from Tuesday evening, the army said, following calls to each side from U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken over fierce fighting in Khartoum that saw shots fired at a U.S. diplomatic convoy.
5. A Moscow court rejected an appeal from U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich to be freed from pre-trial detention, meaning he will stay in a former KGB prison until at least May 29 while a spying case against him is investigated.
