Senator: Increase Capitol security ‘dramatically’
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy said security at the Capitol Building must be ‘dramatically’ increased during protests, or the rules of engagement used by police need to change so police can more aggressively deal with rioters. (Jan. 7)
Murphy is the top Democrat on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch, which oversees the United States Capitol Police.
Murphy said he was working with the Capitol Police and the Department of Defense to figure out why it took hours for the military to arrive.
When asked his response to videos of rioters entering the Capitol, Murphy said the Capitol Police were investigating what happened but said that a confrontation between rioters and police went on for an hour before the rioters could get inside.
President Donald Trump says he totally disagrees with the outcome of the election and claims falsely that the facts bear him out. Protestors loyal to Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol Wednesday. Now there are fresh questions — including about the president’s fitness to remain in office and the police’s ability to secure the Capitol complex from a mob.
